Any amendment to the qualifying standards for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon made as a result of changes made by the IAAF in qualifying standards for the Olympic Marathon will be communicated immediately on USATF.org

Qualifying window:
Marathon: September 1, 2017 to January 19, 2020*
Half Marathon: September 1, 2018 to January 19, 2020*
Additional Opportunities:

Overall Champions of the 2018 and 2019 USATF Running Circuit will be considered as having met the “A” standard.

The top six (6) finishers in the 2019 USATF Marathon Championships (site and date TBD) will be considered as having met the “A” standard.

An athlete is eligible for “automatic qualification” (USATF Rule 8) if that athlete has accomplished the following. Athletes are not eligible to receive funding to the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon unless athlete has met Olympic Trials “A” Standard:

Winners of the 2017 and 2018 USATF Marathon Championships

Earned an individual medal in the 2017 IAAF World Championships Marathon, or 2019 IAAF World Championships Marathon

All members of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Team
Qualifying Guidelines:

Athletes must meet at least the “B” standard in order to enter the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon event.

The qualifying mark must be made on a USATF certified course, in an event sanctioned by USA Track & Field or a member federation of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). The course must be USATF/IAAF/AIMS certified with an active course certification and have an elevation loss no greater than 3.25 meters/km. All course configurations will be accepted (no minimum separation).

The Men’s and Women’s Marathon qualifying standards must be met from September 1, 2017 to January 19, 2020*. The Men’s and Women’s Half Marathon qualifying standards must be met from September 1, 2018 to January 19, 2020*.

All qualifying performances are subject to verification

“Gun” time is the only acceptable method of timing. Chip/net times cannot be used for qualifying. Consideration may be given to “chip/tag” times for competitors with “gun” times extremely close to the above qualifying standards.
